One of my favorite Star Trek fan fiction writers, StarTrekFanWriter, has written an excellent piece on the idea that after Vulcan was destroyed, there was an excess of male Vulcans and not enough females to bond with them. I just read an article reporting that China is having this very same problem.

I'll be going on a spiritual journey in a few days.  ...not sure if I'm ready, but I'm very nervous and excited.

Helen Mirren should give pointers on how she manages to look more attractive (and comfortable in her skin) than many women half her age.

I just remembered something that happened to me after I saw the latest Star Trek movie... (spoiler alert!!)

I saw this link today on slashdot by SciFi author Charles Stross entitled Why I Hate Star Trek.  He references a video in which Star Trek writer/producer Roger Moore talks about how they added technobabble to Star Trek scripts for the sole purpose of furthering the plot.

Ahhh... I found this picture of Salma Hayek on a site that makes fun of bad celebrity outfits, and occasionally celebrates good ones.  I never cease to be amazed by how beautiful and ageless she is.  Well played, indeed.

I wanted to write something, but ideas wouldn't come.  Even from journaling, which usually helps.  Then, I suddenly got the idea to look up creative writing prompts.  I found a long list of prompts, and picked the one that corresponds to my age (because today is my birthday).  And the prompt was...

List 20 things you are afraid of.  Pick one fear and write about it.

Once I had my list, I wrote snippets based on THREE of the fears.  And here they are:

Rating: G
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything
Summary: Amanda finds her associate a bit strange
A/N: I was intrigued by the description of how you know a Vulcan is into you, as imagined by brightfame in this episode of her excellent Cygnus Beta series. I wanted to see this happening between Sarek and Amanda, without Amanda realizing it yet.   Thank you wyntreaurora for beta'ing!!

I want to post a link to a fic that I read a few days ago called The Mirror.  It's a very interesting, sort of sad story about Spock, when he was about 22.  It's a companion piece to a long and wonderful work in progress called Descartes Error.  What I love about the characterization of Spock here is that he's not the childlike almost-andriod that we see in a lot of fan fiction about him (at least when it comes to his relationship with Uhura).  He's a man with both Vulcan and human tendencies, and he has had sexual experiences.  He doesn't fall in love, though, until he meets his match in Descartes Error.  Knowing that this happens makes "The Mirror" a little less sad, but still..  It really stayed with me after reading it.

Mom's Chili BeansI never really learned how to cook *real* (non-dessert or bread) food until I got married and had a reason to sit down and eat with someone on a daily basis.  Before that, I would cook from time to time, but it was always a crapshoot.  I had maybe a 30% success rate.  At some point, while trying to build a repertoire of meals, I ran into this site:  Simply Recipes.  It was a godsend.  When I follow recipes from this site, my success rate is closer to 80% or 90%.

This dish (pictured) is called "
Mom's Chili Beans" and it is excellent.  Every time.  It's fast, inexpensive and even better the next day.  I used canned beans and 7% fat turkey, but other than that, FOLLOW THE RECIPE EXACTLY.  It's the cilantro at the end that really does it.

Other recipes I've had success with are
Classic Baked Chicken, Morroccan Spiced Grilled Chicken Breasts, Italian Sausage Spaghetti (I use smoked turkey sausage since I don't eat pork, and sometimes use Quinoa instead of pasta), Shrimp Cakes (I used white potatoes and Panko crumbs), Spicy Corn Fritters, Smoked Salmon and Goat Cheese Toasts, Strawberry Mascarpone Tart, Suzanne's Best Brownies, and Suzanne's Chocolate Cake (there's a great story that accompanies this one.  Oh, and I cut the recipe in half and put it in a 9x13 pan.  Same cooking time.).

Ahhh... I'm hungry now.

Nyota tread numbly through the hallways, intent on hiding out in her room.  This was all... too much.

"Nyota!  There you are!" Lieutenant Hassan called out to her.  She was not in the mood to socialize.

    "Hey Bob," she replied flatly.

"I'm taking off tomorrow morning. Do you and Spock wanna catch a bite in the mess hall?"

"No thanks," Nyota responded indignantly.  The last thing she wanted to do right now was see Spock or Spock's old roommate.

"No thank you," Nyota replied curtly when Christine offered her something to drink.

This is going to be awkward, Christine thought to herself as she sat at the opposite end of the couch.

After an uncomfortable silence, Christine gazed at Nyota earnestly, "I just.. want to say that.. you are my friend, I care about you, and I never meant to hurt you."

A/N: Part 1 can be found here

Nyota wandered aimlessly through the hallways. Where do I go?  What do I do?  She thought to herself, as her world crumbled around her.  How could she begin to deal with this emotional overload?  Perhaps she should try the meditation techniques she'd learned from Spock... Spock.

She knew his shift would be ending within the hour.  The only way she could make sense of this was by confronting Spock.  Besides.. maybe it wasn't true.  How could it be?   Why would he ever keep something like this from her, as she worked alongside and befriended his supposed ex… fling? girlfriend? There had to be a reasonable explanation.

Summary: Nyota finds out about something Spock neglected to mention...
A/N: Thank you to the magnificent
mirandariver (author of NAR) who beta'd this story.  I made LOTS of changes afterwards, so any bad writing/characterization is purely my responsibility.

“Geez, Spock!  How long has it been since graduation?”  his old roommate wondered, “Five, six years?”
“It has been five years and four months since our commencement ceremony,” he replied.
Although Robert Hassan had roomed with Spock for all four years of their Starfleet training, they hadn’t kept in touch since.  Lieutenant Hassan ’s temporary visit to the Enterprise afforded the two schoolmates a chance to catch up.

"It is good to see you again, Bob."  Spock remarked.
Bob sensed that Spock had changed for the better since their time in school.  He seemed.. warmer, somehow.  More open.  The two of them had never been extremely close, but you learn a lot about someone when you live with them for that long, and he liked the changes he was seeing.

“Why don’t we meet for lunch after my rotation?” Lieutenant Hassan offered.

“That would be satisfactory,” he replied.

About a week and a half ago, I pounded out a four part Spock/Uhura fanfic, and it felt so great.  I picked an angle that I haven't seen done before, and I am pretty excited about it.  It is my first non-drabble fanfic.  I found a beta reader to look over it, and she pointed out some obvious problems in the writing and characterization.  For instance, I hadn't realized how whiny I'd made Uhura.  And I HATE it when people make her whiny and not awesome..  Bah..  So, I'm working the kinks out of the story, and finding the editing process to be much more difficult than the writing the thing in the first place.  But, you gotta start somewhere, right?
